(Persia Digest) – Iranian striker, Sardar Azmoun, who plays for Zenit in St Petersburg, has succeeded in becoming the first Iranian an all-time leading goalscorer in the history of UEFA Champions League by scoring against the French Olympique Lyonnais FC.
Persia Digest (PD) reports that in the first match of the new UEFA League season, the Russian Zenit team met with Olympique Lyonnais FC to draw 1-1. Sardar Azmoun scored the first goal of the 2019-2020 season, which is a first for an Iranian player.
This was Azmoun’s third goal in UEFA and earned him the title of all-time leading goalscorer alongside former Iranian Team Melli captain, Ali Daei, in the world’s top clubs tournament.
Azmoun had already scored playing for FC Rostov against Bayern Munich and Atlético de Madrid. With three scored goals, he is standing side-by-side with Ali Daei who scored three goals in 15 matches at the UEFA League. Azmoun scored his three goals in seven matches.
By scoring two goals against Fanar Baghcheh FC on 21 February 2019, Azmoun also became the best Iranian goalscorer in the European League. Former Bayern Munich and Team Melli player, Ali Daei, held the record in this with 6 goals. His record was broken by Azmoun who has scored 8 goals to make it to the top.
In the winter of 2019, Azmoun joined Zenit in St Petersburg to the tune of 12 million euros after shining at the 2019 AFC Cup.
He is 24 years old, played 47 times for Team Melli, and has scored 30 goals.
