(Persia Digest) – Today, 23 September, is the birthday of Mohammad-Reza Shajarian, Iranian musician, composer, calligrapher, traditional vocalist, and two Grammy Awards nominee, who is known as the king of Iranian song.
He was born on 23 September 1940 in Mashhad, northeastern Iran. He began singing from an early age. His talent was trained by his father who was a qari reader of the Holy Quran.
After leaving Mashhad for Tehran, he began working with groups of traditional Iranian song. He is the most renowned vocalist in this genre.
Shajarian has released numerous albums and won many awards. Shajarian and Shahram Nazeri are the only two Iranian vocalists who have been awarded the French National Order of the Legion of Honour.
Following the deadly earthquake in Bam in the winter of 2003, Mohammad-Reza Shajarian staged a number of concerts in Tehran and donated the proceeds to the victims.
He released a video in Nowruz 2016 announcing that he was in hospital going through cancer treatment.
Many Iranian musicians, including Hossein Alizadeh, who have worked with Shajarian throughout the years, have sent him birthday greetings today on the occasion of his 79th birthday.
Shajarian is one of Iran’s most popular musicians who has also staged numerous concerts worldwide.
