(Persia Digest) – The President of the Iranian Red Crescent Society has said that contrary to the international convention, the US has blocked aid worth euros 3.5MM in cash collected for flood victims in Iran.

However, Ali Asghar Payvandi said the non-cash assistance provided by countries and the International Federation of the Red Crescent and the Red Cross had reached Iran and sent to people in flood-hit areas.

Persia Digest (PD) reports that from the end of February and especially in March 2019, torrential rains in Iran turned into deadly floods in many provinces including Golestan, Lorestan, and Khuzestan which were the hardest hit. Many people lost their homes and needed essential goods such as water, food, and clothing.

At the request of the Iranian government, certain countries made cash and non-cash contributions to the flood victims. But, according to the President of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, the US has blocked the cash collected by the International Federation of the Red Crescent due to its inhumane, unilateral sanctions and made it impossible to reach Iran by blocking currency account transactions and SWIFT.

Payvandi said that we offered the monitor of the money transfer and even follow-up inside the country, adding: “Sadly, not a single euro or dollar of the money has been transferred to Iran as of today.”

According to him, the US has taken this measure while sanctions do not include medicine, health, and humanitarian aid.

The President of the Iranian Red Crescent Society also said that US sanctions also prevented Iran from purchasing three Bell helicopters made in Italy, because 20 percent of its shares belong to the US. Therefore, we went to Russia for our purchase of helicopters.
