The goal of the coup was to strengthen the hand of the West’s ally Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the creation of a new Iran Action Group to coordinate U.S. policy toward the Islamic Republic in the wake of the U.S. withdrawal from the nuclear accord with Iran.

Japan-US talks to avoid effects of Iran sanctions

Reurters writes that Japan is analyzing the impact of U.S. sanctions on Iran, which aim to cut Tehran’s oil exports out of the market, and will talk with Washington and other nations to avoid Japanese firms being adversely affected, the top government spokesman said Wednesday. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a news conference that Japan and the United States were in talks about the sanctions on Iran but declined to reveal details.
