Yaounde – Thursday, January 13, 2022, 7:13 pm
Hosts Cameroon qualified for the Round of 16 of the African Cup of Nations with a 4-1 victory over Ethiopia in the second round of Group A.
The “Indomitable Lions” were caught with the wrong foot by the East Africans in the fourth minute: Cameroon’s defense responded harshly to Ethiopia’s first raid, as Hotesa fired unimpeded.
But Cameroon responded in the eighth minute. Ethiopia goalkeeper Teklemariam is only able to block a long-range shot by Abubakar, and Faye passes the free ball into the penalty area, as the unmarked Toko Ekambi nodded to equalize.
In the second half, Abu Bakr made the decision with a double kick. In the 53rd minute, Al-Nasr striker Al-Riyadh made a cross in Faye. Two minutes later, captain Kamerun scored a Stangl pass from close range that Altacher Ngamaleu played into the goal. In the 67th minute, Toko Ekambi also tied his double. Lyon striker Houngla runs through and then dries up Ethiopia’s defense before the ball lands in the near corner.
Salzburg defender Onegin remains on the bench, as well as former Altascher Gué. Ngamaleu, who was also under contract with ‘Ländle’, was substituted in the 69th minute.
With six points from two matches, Cameroon managed to advance to the Round of 16, for which the group winners, runners-up and four of the best third-placed teams qualify. The match day will be concluded at 8pm with a duel between Cape Verde and Burkina Faso.
