The tragedy occurred on Monday, December 4, and police confirmed the news in a press conference broadcast by Reuters. The woman and man were kayaking at a resort a few meters from the beach when the animal bit her. Bahamas Police spokeswoman Sergeant Desiree Ferguson said a rescuer immediately went out in a boat to try to save the couple.

“CPR was performed on the victim. “But he suffered serious injuries to the right side of his body, including the hip area as well as the right upper extremity,” Ferguson said. The woman, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead a few minutes later. The attack comes just one day after a 26-year-old woman died after being bitten by a shark in Mexico while swimming with her young daughter. Shark attacks are rare in the Bahamas, but several have been reported in recent months.
