A 50-year-old man armed with a kitchen knife attacked children leaving Zhongguancun Primary School in the Chinese city of Beijing and injured five people, including three students.
The attack occurred in the Chinese capital today at around 3.20pm local time (8.20am Italian time), near the intersection of Wanquanchuang Road and Wanliuzhong Road, in Haidian District. Police arrested the suspect, a 50-year-old man surnamed Tang, while the five people who were shot were taken to hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
The site of the attack was a branch of Zhongguancun No. 3 Primary School, and social media posts said the stabbing occurred outside the school gate. However, this version has not been confirmed by the police or state media.
The school, one of Beijing's best primary schools, was the focus of the latest reported incident of knife attacks in major Chinese cities that has drawn greater public attention to personal safety in public places. The victims also included foreigners, such as the Japanese student who was shot in the chest in September outside his Japanese school in Shenzhen, at a time when China is trying to project a positive image of itself to the world and attract more tourists and visitors.
