Miami, May 15 (EFE). – The US National Hurricane Center on Sunday issued its first “routine” bulletin of weather conditions in the tropical Atlantic basin ahead of the start of hurricane season, which this year will have “above average annual” activity.

According to the above bulletin, the formation of tropical cyclones is not expected in the North Atlantic, the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico during the next five days.

“This product describes significant areas of severe weather and the potential for tropical cyclone formation over the next five days,” the Miami-based NHC explains for forecasts that begin releasing each year from May 15 to November 30.

Although the official start date for hurricane season in the Atlantic basin is June 1, the observatory is moving forward because hurricanes appeared “obsolete” several years ago.

The NHC issues at least four bulletins daily during hurricane season, but if hurricanes occur in an area, it usually issues more.

According to the annual forecast released last April by Colorado State University in the USA, the upcoming hurricane season in the Atlantic will have “above average annual” activity and will record four “major hurricanes”.

The Atlantic Basin hurricane season, which officially ends November 30, according to the CSU, will record a total of nine hurricanes with sustained winds of at least 74 mph (119 km/h), an amount higher than the average of seven hurricanes.

Major hurricanes pack winds of at least 111 mph (178 km/h).

CSU takes as a reference the averages set by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), based on history recorded between 1991 and 2020 in the Atlantic.

The report forecasts a total of 90 days of storms, above the 80-day average, as well as 35 days of hurricanes, as in 2020 and 2021, but above the 27-day average.

NOAA will announce its preliminary forecast for the 2022 season during a press conference on May 24 at the New York City Department of Emergency Management in Brooklyn. EFE
