Preliminary reports said one person was killed and four were injured. A person has been arrested in connection with the attack, California authorities said.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department issued a warning about the shooting at 2 a.m. local time on their Twitter account. He said the shooting took place at a church in Laguna Woods Township, a retired community in the southern part of the county.
Orange County firefighters and paramedics “are treating several patients at the scene,” local fire officials said. California Governor Gavin Newsom said the office is working with local authorities and monitoring the situation.
“We have arrested one person and recovered the weapons involved,” the sheriff’s department said in a tweet, noting the motives behind the new shooting at this point. “No one should be afraid to go to their places of worship. Our thoughts are with the victims, ”his office tweeted.
Laguna Woods and Laguna Woods Village are “communities” inhabited by the majority of 55-year-olds and their companions or relatives.
