(ANSA) – CAIRO, May 28 – At least 31 people were killed in Nigeria’s southern state of Rivers when a crowd broke out in a church where food was being distributed. “An investigation is underway,” said local police spokeswoman Grace Iringi Koko. According to Iringi Koko, “Some people showed up early, some got impatient and started pushing, which led to a rush.” It was a much anticipated charitable distribution at the religious gathering in Port Harcourt. Today was actually the fourth annual event that the King’s Assembly Church wanted to “share free food and other valuables with the public,” the website of Nigerian newspaper The Nation wrote.
An eyewitness reported that the church, after the “night vigil” that began last night, announced to its followers that the distribution would begin at nine in the morning. (Dealing).
