With the iPhone 14 (likely) dropping in September, we expect to get an idea of what the next generation of Apple smartphones will offer. But if new reports are to be believed, one of the coolest iPhone updates in years could be revealed next week.
iPhone fans have been clamoring for a durable display for years, especially since the technology came to the Apple Watch two years ago. According to Marc Gorman, a veteran Apple leaker, Apple could be planning to introduce an always-on display as part of iOS 16 — which means we might see at WWDC next week. in Power On Newsletter (Opens in a new tab)Gurman shows how the lock screen refresh rate can be significantly reduced, allowing the screen to display static information without significantly affecting battery life.
An always-on display may allow basic information such as the time, date, and notifications to remain on the screen without having to press the power button. This can only be a good thing for creatives – being able to look at the time on your iPhone while it’s sitting at your desk definitely seems more convenient than having to reach for the power button to turn it on.
And now for the bad news. While Apple may reveal the technology as soon as next week, Gurman claims it may still be reserved for the highly anticipated iPhone 14 and 14 Pro. Apple was rumored to be planning an always-on display for the iPhone 13, but that of course wasn’t the case.
