Second division football team FC St. Pauli started the new season with a win at home. Keyskicker beat 1. FC Nürnberg 3-2 (3-0) at a sold-out Millerntor Stadium on Saturday.
For the eleventh game in a row, Hamburg remained unbeaten against Franconia (six wins, five draws). As one of the promotion candidates, “Club” was better in the first round and had more chances to score, the victory came with interest. But it was the hosts who scored. It was a clear blow at times in the second half – with a better finish for the brown and white.
“We had some good solutions, but also some problems – but in the end we were deserved winners,” St. Paul coach Timo Schultz said of a positive result. The 44-year-old doesn’t want a goal for the season: “We already have three points.” However, it is clear that the Hamburgers can travel to Hannover 96 with more confidence in a week that they lost 1:2 at Kaiserslautern on Friday evening.

Irvine’s header made it 1-0
After a lively and respectable start, St. Pauli exposed itself more and more to pressure from Nuremberg. Christoph Dafferner was unable to capitalize on a misunderstanding between Jakov Medic and Smarsch (6′). Again Dafferner (14th) and then Askar Sørensen (20th) had more good chances for Franks.

But then, out of nowhere, the keykicker struck. Team captain Liard Bagarada curled a free kick past Jackson Irvine, who scored with a header by the co-captain to make it 1-0 (24th). St. Paul’s defense didn’t bring safety – especially because Smarsh repeatedly posed a danger with annoying excursions.
Baccarat and Dashner double strike
But the brown and whites had luck that day. Baccarat converted a dubious penalty kick (Christopher Schindler on Lukas Daschner) to make it 2-0 (37th). Moments later, Daschner somehow outwitted the Nuremberg defense and opened fire. It was an almost unbelievable half-time score, given the way the game played out.
Open exchange of blows in round two
Immediately after the restart, Nuremberg reduced the lead to 1:3, when Kwadwo Dua headed past Adam Disvikala to score (46th). An apparent exchange was created in the now sold out Millerenter. Bakarada (51′), Egstein (56′) and Marcel Hartel (69′) could have scored for St. Paul – on the other hand against Smarsch Dafferner (55′), Erik Wegesser missed (62′).
Things calmed down after that. As the game progressed, the Nurembergers lost hope that they could take one more point. St. Pauli was able to take the lead with time, letting the ball and the opposition run freely. Medic’s error in injury time by Enrico Valentini brought the visitors to 2:3 – but the thrill of victory lasted only a minute.
