A 28-year-old Libyan was arrested in Brandenburg, Germany, accused of planning an attack on the Israeli embassy in Berlin.
According to Bild newspaper, the man was arrested in Bernau as part of investigations conducted by the Anti-Terrorism Department.
The 28-year-old is believed to be a supporter of ISIS. Bild newspaper reported that the arrest was made after receiving signals from intelligence services in another country, and it is not clear whether the suspect intended to work with weapons or explosives. According to what was reported by the tabloid newspaper, the young man planned to escape from his uncle in Sankt Augustin, near Bonn, immediately after carrying out the robbery, and then escape abroad. The 28-year-old arrived in Germany in November 2022 and requested asylum in January 2023. Although his application was rejected on September 28, 2023, he was still able to stay in Germany in the small town of Brandenburg, with a population of 45,000.
Investigators heard the uncle as a witness, and it cannot be ruled out that the man was not aware of his nephew's plans. As part of the investigation, the house where the suspect was staying and some cars were searched.
The Israeli embassy in Berlin confirmed that an attack had been planned against the diplomatic headquarters and thanked security officials in Germany.
