Henri Laaksonen continues to fly the Swiss flag aloft for the men at the US Open. He is now in the third round.
- Henri Laaksonen (ATP 130) reached the third round of the US Open.
- The 29-year-old surprisingly beat Chilean Cristian Garin (ATP 19) with 3:6, 7:6 (7:5), 6:2, 6:4.
- In the third round, Laaksonen will now meet Germany’s Peter Jojowczyk (midfield 141).
Before the meeting, Garen predicted a “tough match.” In fact, it became difficult for Garin. So difficult that the favorite Chilean lost the match.
On the other hand, Henri Laaksonen celebrated his sudden coup. In the only duel to date, Garin easily won two sets in the Houston quarterfinals in 2019.
This time Laksonen managed to withstand it. Garen still dominates the first move. In the second round, the tide turned in favor of the Swiss. Laksonen played hard and advanced 5-0 before it got worse again. The Chilean fought his way back and finally reached the tiebreak. There Laksonen held the top with 7:5. It was a long sentence because when Laksonen was 2-0, the players had to leave the field for about 30 minutes due to rain.
It was the turning point in this game. Laaksonen easily won the third set with 6:2. In the fourth set, Schaffhauser had two breaks. That was enough. He finally turned his second match point into 6:4 and thus to win the match.
The only Swiss on the main field will now face Peter Gojowczyk (ATP 141) of Germany in the third round. He also surprisingly won qualification in 5 sets against Dusan Lajovic (ATP 40). It will be the first duel between the players.
