US Open: Fitzpatrick wins, Hadwin down

England’s Matt Fitzpatrick claimed the first major title of his career on Sunday in Massachusetts when he won the US Open.

Fitzpatrick made a 68 (-2) in the fourth round to finish the tournament single-handedly at the top of the standings at -6.

Americans Scottie Scheffler (67) and Will Zalatores (69) barely pick up dust with a cumulative score of -5. They were unable to subtract a shot from parity at the 18th pennant to be able to force an extension.

Fitzpatrick had a roller coaster day. After scoring three birds and a ghost at the front nine, he stumbled across the 10th and 11th flags to find himself at -4. However, the 27-year-old golfer regained his composure on the 13th hole, scoring a 48-foot-long shot for the birdie on the 13th and taking another shot on the 15th.

Fitzpatrick became the second golfer to win the US Amateur golf tournament and the US Open at the same course; He achieved this feat at The Country Club in Brooklyn. Jack Nicklaus was the first to achieve this feat.

However, today’s best performance goes to Japanese Hideki Matsuyama (65). He had a smooth run and five birdies to finish fourth at -3.

For his part, Canadian Adam Hadwin had a mixed day, he was the one who gave the card 71 (+1). After taking the lead with the first round 66 (-4), Hadwin was unable to place another sub-par card. It dropped three places to tie to finish seventh at -1.

The only other Maple Leaf representative still in competition, Mackenzie Hughes, played on a par to stay at +4 and finish 24th.
