Huawei in China on Thursday unveiled its new flexible screen mobile format, the P50 Pocket, which sticks to a compact, shell-like design with a 6.9-inch inner panel and a one-inch circular outer screen.
The new Huawei P50 Pocket features a design similar to previous foldable devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr, similar to traditional foldable phones. It comes after Huawei’s previous foldable tablet-like mobile format, the Mate X series.
The flexible terminal takes advantage of a new multi-dimensional hinge mechanism that improves its durability and bend fluidity, Huawei reported on its China website. The internal OLED display measures 6.9 inches when extended and has a tall aspect ratio of 21:9.
Huawei introduced its main board with other functions, including a refresh rate of 120 hertz (Hz), support for 1.07 billion colors and the P3 spectrum, eye protection technology, and FHD + resolution.
The P50 Pocket’s secondary display is located on the outside in a circular design that is symmetrical with the 1.04-inch camera that enables display of clock, notifications and wallpaper. It supports displaying 16.7 million colors and a resolution of 340 x 340 pixels, as well as various designs of fields.
The total weight of the device is 190 grams, it is 7.2 mm thick when opened and 15.2 mm when the screen is folded compactly.
At the rear camera level, the device chooses a triple configuration, with a main sensor of 40 megapixels, a wide angle of 13 megapixels and a third lens of 32 megapixels. On its part, the front camera, with a resolution of 10.7 megapixels, is perforated on the screen.
Huawei has equipped the third sensor in its main camera with a new technology for ultra-spectrum imaging, which the company explained is capable of detecting details that the naked eye does not appreciate in low light. It also has a 10x digital zoom and auto focus.
Inside, the new flexible “smartphone” with a Snapdragon 888 processor works in its version with only 4G, up to 12 GB of RAM, 512 GB of storage and 4000 mAh with fast charging 40W. The alternative Android operating system uses Huawei’s HarmonyOS 2.
It has a fingerprint reader on the side, and like Samsung’s foldable Galaxy Z Fold 3 series, it has IP68 certified water and dust resistance.
Huawei P50 Pocket is available in three colors: white with a diamond texture, black and gold also with texture, and the latter in a special edition designed by artist Iris Van Herpen.
The basic 8 + 256 GB configuration is sold in China at 8,988 yuan (1,247 euros at the exchange rate), while the Gold Special Edition goes up to 12 + 512 GB for 10,988 yuan (1,524 euros).
