Contaminated bread: products pulled across France

Several breads sold in supermarkets have undergone a nationwide recall since Thursday, March 31, due to a substance considered toxic.

Many batches of bread sold at Intermarché, Super U, and Netto contain a lot of alkali. This plant-derived molecule is used in medicine as a pain reliever and is naturally present in some seeds. The use of this molecule is not prohibited, but there is a limit set by EU regulations that it should not exceed.

A nationwide campaign was launched on Thursday, March 31, for consumers to return products that contain a lot of this molecule.

Four types of bread are affected by this recall campaign. The 350-gram rustic baguette was sold at Netto and Intermarché between February 21 and March 30, 2022. The 250-gram rustic baguette purchased between March 2 and 30, which was sold in the same stores, was also recalled.

The 300g rustic nut bread sold at Intermarché and Netto between February 16 and March 30 is also affected by this recall campaign. Finally, the 300g bastard rye bread purchased at Super U between February 15 and March 26, 2022 must also be returned.

It is strongly advised not to consume these products and to return them to the point of sale. Refunds are planned for all consumers through April 13th.
