Kamala Harris was “naughty” two days ago And that, in the US presidential election scheduled for November 5, 2024, could make a difference. Harris, 59, has been the Democratic nominee for the White House for only three days, but countless memes depicting her as the protagonist have already gone viral on social media.
In fact, immediately after the dramatic announcement of Joe Biden’s resignation, liberal and progressive stars and influencers began working to support Harris, aiming to mobilize one of the Democratic electorate’s segments, young people, who were most at risk from the 81-year-old president’s candidacy.
What does naughty mean?
Harris' most welcome digital endorsement came from the English pop star. Charli XCX – born Charlotte Emma Aitchison – who released the song “Kamala is Brat” just hours after Biden's resignation, referring to the title of her sixth album that has become the concept and life statement for summer 2024. The singer-songwriter explains that being brat means being “a girl who's a little bit messy, who loves to have fun and maybe says stupid things sometimes, who's very honest, who's direct, who's a little bit volatile, that's bratty.”
Being naughty also has a color, and it's the lime green of the singer's album cover, which instantly became the color of summer. Harris's team responded immediately, immediately adopting the green “naughty” word on X's official website and using the same letters that Charli XCX used on her album cover to spell out the name of the vice president.
The LGBT community was immediately sensitive to Kamala Pratt.Hours after Biden announced his retirement, photos and videos emerged on social media of people on Fire Island, a favorite gay beach destination in New York, wearing naughty green T-shirts with the word Kamala on them, and the same characters as Charli XCX’s album.
“Brat Kamala shirts are already on Fire Island, and the gays are moving really fast,” one user commented, some of whom also gave the Democrat another codename, “Mother.” “Biden is out, Mother Kamala is your time,” one post read.
Finally, there’s the coconut. It all started with an unfortunate joke from Harris in May 2023, when he said, “Do you think I fell out of a coconut tree?” To understand how it all fits into context, the video has continued to circulate online ever since, but it wasn’t until June 28 — the day after Biden’s Atlanta debate debacle and the start of calls for the aging president to step down — that Google searches for the video and related memes began to spike.
Some say these memes help Harris gain an organic presence on Gen Z's social media platforms.a presence that could help her once she becomes the official candidate, as she presents a sarcastic face and is able to enjoy even saying stupid things at times. Exactly naughty.
“Harris doesn’t take herself too seriously, she knows how to have fun, she’s willing to be less strict than traditional presidential candidates, and I think that’s a good thing for this election,” said Mariana Pecora, 20. The George Washington University student who leads Voters for Tomorrow, a Generation Z political mobilization group, told NBCnews that Harris’ memes are not just a laughing stock, but also a sign that she can gain greater support among young people.
