Mark Zuckerberg took Facebook’s firm defense in a note to staff following allegations in the Senate by former (now “Mole”) director Francis Haugen, which he believes are “meaningless”.
“We are very concerned – he writes – about issues such as safety, well-being and mental health. It is hard to see a cover that distorts our work and our motivations. On the most basic level, I think many of you are unaware of the false picture of society that has been painted.”
Zuckerberg further stressed that “the argument that we are deliberately promoting content that makes people angry for profit is highly illogical.” And then: “We make money from ads and advertisers are constantly telling us that they don’t want their ads to be close to harmful or angry content. And I don’t know of any tech company that wants to make products that irritate or depress people. Ethical and commercial incentives and products are all pointing in the opposite direction.”
