Shortwave, an email client launched by ex-Google employees, revives Inbox Messages

If you shed a tear when Google Inbox beta messages disappeared in 2019, the arrival of Shortwave should put a smile on your face. This new email client, created by ex-Google employees, has an air of deja vu. Shortwave appears to be a worthy descendant of the updated Google Mailbox project. The app, which only manages the Gmail inbox, is visually very similar to what was once in Inbox.

But also and above all the features offered by Shortwave are what remind us of Inbox. This new inbox takes care of automatically organizing emails in your Gmail inbox based on contacts and context. Conversations are also automatically categorized and grouped. Messages can be treated as a to-do list, with the option to pin the most important messages to the top of the inbox, schedule reminders, or mark them as processed.

Shortwave also offers collaborative tools. It is possible, for example, to create discussion channels in which you can mention your interlocutors and exchange opinions with them, as in an instant messenger.

The app is available in a free version that remains limited: you won’t be able to search for messages after 90 days and the collaborative functionality is limited to 10 participants and five channels. You have to pay $9 per month to unlock the full potential of the solution.

Shortwave is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux as a web app, and it can also be installed on iOS and Android as a trial version.
