(ANSA) – WASHINGTON, June 7 – Federal prosecutors have notified former US President Donald Trump that he is the target of a criminal investigation. The notification is a sign that Special Counsel Jack Smith, who is investigating classified papers the businessman brought to his Mar-a-Lago home, is about to indict Trump.
In recent weeks, Smith has brought several figures from the businessman’s inner circle before the grand jury investigating the classified documents case, including one of his attorneys, Evan Corcoran, and former chief of staff Mark Meadows.
Trump’s former spokesperson, Taylor Bowditch, has admitted he was questioned in Florida. The letter sent today to the former US president is a sign that an indictment could take days, if not hours. Under a Department of Justice regulation, prosecutors can send a “addressed letter” to those who could be charged in connection with a grand jury investigation, giving them an opportunity to testify before the charge order arrives.
