The Ukrainian Navy claims it has likely destroyed the last Russian missile carriers operating in the Crimean Peninsula in the Black Sea, US news site Business Insider reported, which reported this in a speech on Radio Free Europe. Dmitriz Pletinchuk, of the Ukrainian Navy, said the navy is trying Currently checking whether the small aircraft carrier “Tyklon” was destroyed on Saturday or not. He added to the newspaper that if this is confirmed, it means that there is no longer a Russian missile carrier stationed off the main peninsula.

Crimea

Russia occupied Crimea in 2014, and is home to the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol. According to the Russian website KCHF.ru, which closely follows the news of the Black Sea Fleet, “Tsiklon” entered service only in July. The ship's launcher enables cruise missile strikes against land targets up to 1,500 miles away. In his interview with Radio Free Europe, Pletinchuk stated that in addition to the Russian minesweeper “Kovrovets”, it was also possible to hit the Tsyklon. The Ukrainian Navy had previously said it had destroyed a minesweeper in Saturday's attack, describing it as “another bad day for the Russian Black Sea Fleet.” Ukraine did not provide further details about the attack, such as where it occurred or the weapons used. However, later reports found that the ships were based in Sevastopol.

News

Russia did not report any damage to its ships, only saying on Saturday that it had shot down nine ATACMS missiles and a drone over the Crimean peninsula. The news published by Ukrainian sources has not been confirmed. Crimean Wind, a pro-Ukrainian group that monitors information in Crimea, reported on Telegram that on the night of the alleged attack, a ship of similar length to the Tsiklon disappeared from satellite images in Sevastopol, also on the pro-Russian channel Spy Dossier. He said, citing his sources, that Zaklon was injured. Separate analyzes of Radio Svoboda's open-source social media posts, published on Monday, speculated that it was Tsyklon, not Kovrovets, who was attacked. The Ukrainian Navy did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment. Pletinchuk said that if the Tsyklon was destroyed, it would be a major blow to Russia, as the rest of the missile carriers are now stationed in Novorossiysk.

Fleet

Last year, Russia moved a large portion of its Black Sea fleet from its home port of Sevastopol, to Novorossiysk, hundreds of miles away on the Russian coast. The move came amid Ukraine's ongoing campaign against Black Sea ports and Russian warships, using cruise missiles and drones. In April, Ukraine said it had destroyed or damaged a third of the Russian fleet.
