Boeing said it has “reached a settlement” with the US Department of Justice over two deadly 737 Max crashes more than five years ago. “We have reached a tentative agreement on the terms of the resolution with the Department of Justice,” the company said in a statement to AFP, adding that the deal was subject to “the approval of certain conditions.”
Reuters had earlier quoted a US government official as saying that Boeing had agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit criminal fraud to resolve a US Justice Department investigation.
The accusation refers to Two accidents In Indonesia and Ethiopia in 2018 and 2019, it killed 346 people.
Under the tentative agreement with U.S. prosecutors, Boeing faces a criminal fine of $487.2 million, the maximum allowed by law, though the actual amount will be determined by a judge.
The company will install a corporate screen and must spend at least $455 million to enhance its compliance and security programs over the next three years as part of the settlement, which requires court approval.
