Complaint from the mayor of Charleroi: “An anti-Semitic gesture”
At least 85 graves in the Jewish part of Marcinelle Cemetery in Belgium have been damaged, according to Charleroi Mayor Paul Magnet. According to the Belgian agency. According to Magnet, the location and graves targeted leave no doubt that the damage is of an anti-Semitic nature. The damage is related to the theft of the Star of David affixed to the graves, which was noticed by a cemetery maintenance worker. The city filed a police report and notified all affected families of the damage.
The perpetrators of the act vandalized only the Jewish area of the cemetery: the Stars of David were torn out of the tombstones with burglary tools. No writings were left claiming responsibility.
In Belgium, anti-Semitic acts have escalated since October 7, the day of the Hamas massacre in Israel.
