Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk expects to have half a million active users on his Starlink web within a year and will do “everything possible” to launch the ship’s first unmanned orbital flight in the coming months on the spacecraft’s rocket, she said Tuesday.
The South African-born entrepreneur gave a talk on the second day of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona (northeast Spain), in which he participated almost from California (USA).
According to Musk, the network starlink – which aims to provide high-speed, stable and affordable internet anywhere in the world via satellite – recently exceeded 70,000 users and It expects to grow exponentially to reach half a million customers in about twelve months.
So far, he remembers, It has already launched more than 1,500 satellites, which can cover practically all regions of the planet, especially the most cruel; The goal is to attempt to launch the orbiting spacecraft within the next few months.
He predicted that “in August we should have global connectivity for all parts of the world, except for the poles.”
Musk explained that Starlink will cover areas where fiber or 5G technology does not reach, and where “connection is needed”, but it is “limited or expensive”.
“Next year we will start launching the second version of our satellite. We will start bringing our gateways and points of presence directly to our server centers. We don’t want to be too confident, but it looks like it will be a very positive thing for the major carriers, fiber companies and 5G.”
As the businessman specified it Starlink stations currently cost about $500 in any country in the world – Not counting taxes or import duties – although work is underway to find cheaper devices.
“Frankly, we’re losing money on that station right now, which costs more than $1,000 to produce,” he asserted, after explaining that the internet costs one hundred euros a month and anyone could install it to get connected in about five minutes: “Point to the sky and do it.” Connect it,” he summed up.
He also specified that the investment required by Starlink ranged between 5,000 and 10,000 million dollars, although over time he confirmed that the amount could rise to 20,000 million dollars: “Enough money!”.
new space technology
On the other hand, he pointed out that SpaceX is born to make life a ‘multi-planetary’, with the main task of “expanding consciousness beyond Earth so that we can increase the chances that the future is good.”

To do this, he explained, Spacecraft technology needs ‘radical’ improvement: “The Holy Grail is fast, reliable and reusable rockets. With the Falcon 9, we have achieved the most effective usability of any rocket to date using thrusters that have already flown 10 times.”
In this sense, he noted that the technology being implemented is “very advanced” and starts from a different point of view than that typically used.
Space technology tends to be old technology proven to work on Earth. We take the opposite approach and seize the opportunity. It’s fair to see that we have the latest space ray technology outside the military.”
Musk admitted that his work is based on the philosophy that “we don’t know what the answers are or what questions to ask, but if we can expand our awareness, we will know better what questions to ask about the universe.”
