He added: “Unfortunately, the downturn dominating over the market has affected our exports and there has been no change since last year. We have seen a small rise only due to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, the JCPOA.”

About an increase in the imports of carpets, he said: “Surely, this only pertains to machine-made carpets; because, the Chinese have not yet overtaken us in our art of the handwoven carpet.”

Haji-Aghamiri reiterated: “There was a time when handmade Persian carpets were a strategic export market for Iran. But, with the events that took place in our foreign policy and sanctions, we lost our market. There was a time when Hamburg was the capital of imported Persian carpets. But you no longer see a sign of these in Germany.”

He went on to add: “Unfortunately, we have lost our place on world markets for our handmade carpets due to an extended period of absence. This will not be regained easily.”
