(Persia Digest) – The Nowruz New Year holidays are a good opportunity for Iranians to take time off to travel. Many travel abroad during this time. The peak season holidays during push ticket and tour prices up every year; this has now been aggravated with the recent currency fluctuations in the price of dollar.

Iranians spend Nowruz traveling, visiting family, and spending time in nature. The approaching holidays in the month of March, however, indicates a significant decline in the number of flights booked for overseas due to the high price of the dollar exchange rates.

But is this good news for tourism inside Iran? Will the fluctuating exchange rates, climbing airline ticket prices, and encumbering visa red tapes for Iranians traveling abroad during the peak holiday season be a step forward in increasing travel inside the country?

Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Association of Travel Agencies, Hormatollah Rafi’ei, told ISNA News Agency that “currency fluctuations and the manifold price rises in plane tickets for overseas flights have reduced the number of passengers leaving Iran up to 50 percent during the Nowruz holidays.”

He added: “Hotels abroad have not had a price increase. But, the value of the Iranian rial is falling and airlines have also been charging more for some of their routes.”

The Head of the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism Organization of Iran, Ali-Asghar Munesan, has also predicted: “The number of trips inside Iran during the Nowruz holidays will increase sharply. Overseeing services in the tourism sector will also increase accordingly to prevent rising prices.”
