(Persia Digest) – The Head of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization has announced a joint project with the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) for a prepaid debit card for tourists traveling to Iran. Funds can be added to the card in return for their currency and converted to Iranian rials (IRR).
Ali-Asghar Munesan added: “Sadly, international credit card companies, such as VISA Card and Master Card, are both American companies who have refused to cooperate with us, even following the 2015 JCPOA nuclear agreement with world powers.”
He said: “We are currently endeavoring to formulate a plan whereby tourists landing at Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) in the capital can exchange their currencies for a rial debit card they can use in the city. Upon leaving Iran, any money remaining in the card will be returned to them in currency.”
Munesan explained: “Iranians traveling abroad also take dollars and euros with them. This places a lot of pressure on the country’s foreign exchange reserves. To alleviate this, we have also been planning for an international debit card that can be used outside Iran instead of cash.”
Munesan continued by saying: “This has become possible with the cooperation of one the banks and the first currency card for use outside Iran was issued for the First Vice President, Eshagh Janahgiri, on Sunday 4 February. This will be issued for Iranians traveling abroad.”
