Reactions to Netanyahu claims against Iran

(Persia Digest) – The Iranian Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif, has tweeted calling Netanyahu “obsessive”, saying: “You were the audience for a cartoonish circus just this morning which does not even deserve the dignity of a response,” talking after Netanyahu’s speech. “He did not learn his lesson at the UN and is still trying to misguide people.”

Persia Digest reports that the Israeli Prime Minister has staged his latest show and presentation to target Iran’s JCPOA agreement and accuse it of covert nuclear activities.

Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed he has documents showing that Iran had a nuclear weapons program prior to the 2015 JCPOA nuclear accord, continuing the same path following the agreement.

He claims that Iran has kept its nuclear research secret and intends to use it to make a nuclear bomb at an opportune moment.

These claims by Netanyahu come as Mike Pompeo, former CIA chief and current Secretary of State, said before his confirmation by the Senate: “Prior to the JCPOA agreement, there were no signs of Iran moving towards a nuclear weapons program. It is also not clear that it would have achieved this if the JCPOA had not been signed.”

Federica Mogherini has also reacted to the Netanyahu claims: “The JCPOA is based on verifications and monitoring. The IAEA has already certified Iran’s commitment to its obligation ten times.”

Nevertheless, the White House issued a statement in support of Netanyahu’s recent presentation, stating: “The United States is aware of the information just released by Israel, providing new and compelling details about Iran’s efforts to develop missile-deliverable nuclear weapons.”

But hours after the initial statement was issued by the WH, an amended version was released where the line “Iran has a robust, clandestine nuclear weapons program” had been changed to “Iran had a robust, clandestine nuclear weapons program.”

CNN reporter, Peter Alexander, tweeted from a White House source that this was “an administrative error”.

What seems important here is the timeline of such a claim by the Israeli Prime Minister. Abbas Aragchi, Political Deputy at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had this to say about Netanyahu’s claims: “Staging such a presentation ten days before Trump announces his decision on the JCPOA is clearly “a prearranged show with the aim of impacting Trump’s decision, or perhaps it is a coordinated plan by him and Trump in order to destroy the JCPOA. It is interesting that all parties have besieged Iran and the Zionist regime is leading the act.”
