(Persia Digest) – The CEO of the Water and Sewerage Company of Iran announced: “Electricity production from treated sewage has begun in Tehran. This will also take place in the big cities of Isfahan, Shiraz, and Tabriz in the near future.”

Bahman Vakili added: “During the sanctions, we were unable to buy the equipment for this project. But this has now been resolved with sanctions relief.”

He said electricity generation from sewage was one of the aims of the Ministry of Energy and the Water and Sewerage Company.

As reported by Persia Digest, one of the largest biogas production plants is at the wastewater treatment facilities of southern Tehran. Once this becomes fully operational, it will produce approximately 80 gigawatts of electricity and 270 joules of thermal energy annually. This is enough to provide the supply of a town with 100 thousand residents.

Now with the installation of combined heat and power generation units (CHP) in 6 wastewater treatment units in south Tehran, an estimated 60 gigawatts of electricity and 200 joules of thermal energy will be produced annually. This is enough to provide the supply of a town with 80 thousand residents.

This plant will supply 80% of the electricity and 100% of the heat needed to operate the wastewater plant itself. The savings here will be equal to nearly 150,000 barrels of crude oil or 400,000 cubic meters of gas.
