(Persia Digest) – IRIB Deputy, Morteza Mirbagheri, denied canceling the appearance of Carles Puyol on a sports commentary program on Iranian TV for his appearance and said the real reason was his request of a very high payment.
Persia Digest reports that the special 2018 World Cup program on channel 3 in Iran, entitled 2018, presented by renowned Adel Ferdowsipour, invites well-known sports commentators from the football world to talk on the program. Four years ago, Carlos Donegal and Luis Figo from Brazil appeared on the program in the 2014 World Cup.
This exclusive football program also hosted athlete Samuel Eto'o this year during the Iran-Morocco match. Carles Puyol was supposed to appear on the program during the Iran-Spain match as a commentator, but his appearance was canceled even though he had traveled to Tehran.
The BBC said his non-appearance was due to his appearance.
But IRIB Deputy, Morteza Mirbagheri, denied the allegation and said: “Inviting foreign commentators on TV and payments of hundreds of millions of tomans for a few minutes, even by sponsors, is against, IRIB policies.”
Deputy Speaker of Iranian Parliament, Ali Motahari, also reacted to the news: “The non-appearance of Puyol indicates a feudal rule or that the IRIB takes orders from outside the organization. To make excuses by citing expenses, which had been paid by private sponsors, is not acceptable. Reasonable expenses to maintain community spirits is not wasteful and the cancelation of such a program which had been already announced goes against logic.”
