(Persia Digest) – The spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said: “We discussed Zaghari with Alistair Burt, Deputy Minister to the UK Foreign Secretary, during his trip to Tehran. He was informed that Ms Zaghari has dual nationality, which is not accepted by Iranian laws. He also expressed his viewpoints and received answers about our Judiciary and her conviction.”
Bahram Ghasemi continued: “Ms Zaghari was on leave on humanitarian grounds for a few days, which was welcomed by Mr Burt.”
He added: “To my knowledge, Mr Burt did not meet Zaghari.”
He commented on the letter from Zaghari’s spouse to FM Zarif, saying: “I am not aware of Mr Zarif’s answer. The FM has gone to Damascus in the early morning and we must wait for him to return.”
Persia Digest reports that Iranian-British citizen, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, was arrested on 4 April 2016 as she was leaving Iran for the UK and transferred to prison. She is accused of taking part in the “soft overthrow” of the IR of Iran by working with foreign companies and institutes. Her spouse, Richard Ratcliffe, and the Reuters Foundation employing Zaghari-Ratcliffe have denied the allegations.
The primary court hearing convicted Zaghari to five years in prison on spying charges. Later, however, the Chief Justice of Tehran Province said her case is still open and it is not clear “if she will be convicted or acquitted, or what her punishment will be if she is convicted.”
