(Persia Digest) – The Deputy of the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of Iran has said: “Recent flash floods did not reduce the number of Nowruz trips.”
Teimuri added: “29 million Nowruz holidaymakers have stayed in hotels, B&Bs, and eco-tourism accommodation from 19-26 March 2019, showing a rise of 10 percent YOY.”
He said most visitors traveled to Bushehr, Mazandaran, and Khorasan Razavi provinces over Nowruz, adding: “The number of holidaymakers is expected to increase as the weather improves.”
Persia Digest (PD) reports that increasing Nowruz trips have been announced by Teimuri while petrol consumption dropped in Iran to 88MM and 700 thousand liters on 26 March. This figure was 95MM and 676 thousand liters last year this time, showing a drop of 7.3 percent.
Also, 2MM and 170 thousand liters of fuel has been distributed for free in the flooded provinces of Golestan and Mazandaran provinces.
This significant lower figure shows that people are taking heed of warnings issued by the Met Office and road police not to travel due to torrential rain making roads unsafe.
If the Tourism Organization’s statistics on the number of Nowruz trips are accurate, it can be deduced that most holidaymakers have taken to air and rail travel.
Iran has been inundated with torrential rains and flash floods over the past week. Many provinces have suffered extensive damages and loss of life.
