(Persia Digest) – The Iranian Foreign Minister has responded to what his American counterpart had said by tweeting: “.@SecPompeo has audacity to threaten crimes against humanity targeting ordinary Iranians; then attacks media for reporting his own words. He should either own what he says, or disown what US does. Can't have it both ways.”

Zarif’s tweet was pointing to the tweet of the US Secretary of State condemning Newsweek for publishing what Zarif had said about the impacts of US sanctions on the Iranian people.

Pompeo had tweeted: “Shame on #FakeNewsweek for helping @JZarif spread lies. The truth is: the U.S. does not, and never did, sanction food and medicine. They are exempt from sanctions, as are financial transactions related to humanitarian needs.”

Newsweek had earlier quoted Pompeo in his interview with BBC Persian saying that Iran must listen to America if it wants its people to eat.

Zarif reminded in another tweet: “-All reimposed US sanctions violate UN Security Council Res 2231. -Intention to starve civilian population is crime against humanity. -ICJ already refuted @SecPompeo's claim on humanitarian exemptions. -Western media's factual accounts & attached letters show who's lying.”

In his tweet, Iran’s top diplomat also posted reports by the Guardian and New York Times and documents on the impacts of US sanctions on basic needs, adding: “Western media's factual accounts & attached letters show who's lying.”

The documents show that some of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies have announced in their correspondence with the Iranian parties that they have canceled all trade interactions and sales to Iran because of US sanctions.

Persia Digest (PD) reported that the US abrogated its commitments to the UNSCR 2231 by withdrawing from the 2015 JCPOA nuclear deal and unilaterally reinstating sanctions against Iran.
