(Persia Digest) – Although America claims that sanctions do not include humanitarian goods such as medication, an official of the Health Ministry of Iran has said that the country is forced to even smuggle in lab kits with the help of kolbars.

Dr Shāhin Akhundzadeh said: “The outcome of financial-scientific sanctions is that we are unable to attend scientific seminars; we cannot submit articles; we cannot buy kits. The kolbars have to smuggle the kits in for us.”

People who carry goods on their backs across the Iranian border with Iraq and Turkey are called kolbar, trekking over difficult terrain. Most of them live in the Kurdistan Province of Iran.
