(Persia digest)- The Sahnameh Researchers and Narrators Society has designed the first Badge of Honor named after ‘Gordafarid’ – a Shahnameh Heroine – for prominent Iranian women. Leili Afshar, prominent guitar player, will be the first woman to receive the Badge of Honor.
‘Gordafarid’ has been designed to appreciate the role of Iranian women in history, and the arts and culture. It will be awarded for the meritorious role of women in the arts, culture, sciences, and sports of Iran.
In an interview with ISNA, Kourosh Javadi, the founder of the Badge of Honor, said that the ceremony will take place in December every year and it will be given to Leili Afshar in its initial year. She has been chosen by the Society’s council for her years of continuous and impressive work in music, research, education of students in guitar playing, releasing albums, publishing books, and her relentlessly distinctive work on Iranian folk music.
Leili Afshar is of Azeri origin and born in Tehran. She began learning to play the guitar at the age of 10. She graduated with bachelor’s and master's degrees in music and guitar playing from the Boston and New England Conservatories in 1981 and 1983 and is the first woman in the world to obtain a PhD in guitar playing from Florida State University. She has also spent time studying at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada and the Span Academy of Jazz and Contemporary Music in the US. She has been awarded the Chigiana Music Academy Diploma of Merit in Siena three times.
In 1986, Leili Afshar was one of twelve guitarists worldwide selected to perform in the presence of internationally renowned guitarist Andrés Segovia in his advanced classes at the University of South Florida. This was the time when Segovia predicted that she will become a famous player. He also told her that he had seen the Persian blood and spirit of flamenco in her.
