(Persia Digest) – At a press conference with his Iranian counterpart, the German Foreign Minister who has traveled to Tehran avoided a direct answer to a question asked by an Iranian journalist and proceeded to generalize his response.
At a joint conference of the Iranian and German FMs, an Iranian journalist asked Heiko Maas ‘you announced in this press conference that Germany is seeking to de-escalate tensions in this region, and yet Germany has sold arms to regional countries on a regular basis, thus adding to tensions. Also, Germany has a history of selling chemical weapons to Saddam during his eight-year war against Iran.”
Heiko Maas avoided a direct answer, saying: “The Middle East is a tense region. This is dangerous. Regional and trans-regional countries, including Germany, are trying to de-escalate tensions. Germany is currently a member of the UN Security Council and we will continue our discussions in this area.”

Persia Digest (PD) reports that Heiko Maas landed in Tehran today for meetings with Iran’s top diplomat. The reason for his trip has been stated as trying to save the JCPOA nuclear deal. The Spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry said at his weekly press conference that if Europeans do not take a large, practical step to keep Iran’s interests in the nuclear deal, Iran will decisively move towards implementing the second step of reducing its commitments under the deal.
