(Persia Digest) - The illegal withdrawal of the US from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal caused objection and surprise in the international community, President Hassan Rouhani told British Prime Minister Theresa May in New York.
"We should try to expand cooperation and find a practical framework to preserve the JCPOA and its complete implementation, particularly in economic issues," Rouhani said.
He was referring to the formal name of the nuclear deal; the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) which was signed between Iran and world powers. The US abandoned the agreement in May.
The Iranian President then pointed to the IAEA UN nuclear watchdog's reports stating Iran's full compliance with the JCPOA, adding that "in multilateral agreements, each party's compliance must be balanced and equal."

Rouhani said Iran's military power only serves as a way to defend the country and fight against terrorism. "Our approach is to deescalate tensions in the region and the world."
May, for her part, underlined the need to salvage the JCPOA in all areas and said Tehran and London should continue their cooperation in this regard.
