(Persia Digest) – A Being 707 cargo plane crashed near the city of Karaj in Alborz Province, northwest of Tehran, at 08h30 hours local time Monday morning.
Reports said that 16 people were on board, of whom only the flight engineer survived.
According to some media reports, the plane was heading to Karaj’s Payam Airport from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, but landed in Karaj’s Fath Airport due to the pilot’s mistake.
Meanwhile, local authorities said that a second mistake by the pilot was that he lost control while landing. Thus, the plane skidded off the runway and crashed into a nearby residential area after hitting an airport wall.
The plane was carrying meat from Kyrgyzstan.
Some media sources told Fars News Agency that the plane belonged to the Air Force of the Iranian Army.
Commenting on the incident, the Managing Director of Alborz Red Crescent Society, Naser Charkhsaz, said: “The plane’s destination was Payam Airport; but for unclear reasons it crashed in Fath Airport which belongs to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC).”
He added: “Unfortunately, the plane caught fire after it hit the residential area.”
