(Persia Digest) – The spokesperson for the Iranian government has responded to the US Secretary of State’s request for an interview with Iranian media, saying: “Mrs Marzieh Hasehmi can conduct an interview for Iran with Mr Pompeo.”

Persia Digest (PD) reported earlier that US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, had told Washington Post he will accept an invitation by IRIB state TV for an interview in Iran in the same manner that FM Javad Zarif gives interviews on US TV channels.

In an interview with Bloomberg conducted on Friday 23 July, Pompeo said he is willing to travel to Iran for direct talks with the Iranian people.

The Spokesperson for the Iranian government has now welcomed the offer and introduced a reporter who can interview the Secretary of State.

Speaking at a press conference, Ali Rabiei said: “Our reporter, Mrs Marzieh Hashemi, can conduct an interview with Pompeo in the US. We are ready to hear what he has to say. Their treatment of our reporters and their behavior towards Iranian journalists was disrespect for the media and dialogue.”

Marzieh Hashemi is an anchor, reporter, and documentary-maker of American origin working for Press TV. She has been introduced by the Iranian government for a probable interview with Pompeo.

She is an Iranian-American who was arrested at St Louis International Airport on Sunday 13 January 2019 and taken to an FBI detention center in Washington DC on no charges. This triggered extensive protests by media activists in support of freedom of speech. No charges were brought against Hashemi and she was freed after eleven day and returned to Iran.

The head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of Iran's Parliament at the time, Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh, said that Hashemi had been arrested on direct orders by US President, Donald Trump.

Should the Secretary of State accept the offer of interview by Marzieh Hashemi, it will be a first for a high-ranking official to conduct an interview with an Iranian media outlet since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
