(Persia Digest)- The Turkish Prime Minister heads a high ranking delegation on a one-day trip to Tehran for talks with the Iranian authorities. President Hassan Rouhani formally welcomed Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the Sa'd Abad cultural-historical complex.
The Turkish Foreign Minister and the ministers of economy, energy, customs, culture, tourism, interior, and the Deputy of Turkey's Justice and Development Party are accompanying Erdogan on this trip.
The expansion of bilateral relations and the most important issues in the region and the world are among the issues that will be discussed by the presidents of the two countries. Prior to his trip, Erdogan had stated that he will discuss the situation in northern Iraq with the Iranian authorities.
The presidents of Turkey and Iran have had two reciprocal official trips during Rouhani’s presidency. This is Erdogan’s second trip to Iran and meeting with the President.
The leaders of both countries had called for the development of bilateral economic relations and the increase of trade exchanges to the level of USD 30 billion a year. Taking into account the team that accompanies Erdogan, his recent trip to Iran could be an important step towards achieving the
USD 30 billion trade between the two countries.
It must be noted that the level of trade between the two countries has decreased in recent years, from USD 22 billion in 2012 to USD 9.6 billion in 2016.
